Background of the Study
Environmental degradation is one of the most critical challenges facing Nigeria's oil-producing regions. Companies such as Chevron Nigeria Limited have implemented CSR programs to address environmental concerns, including oil spills, gas flaring, and deforestation. CSR efforts often include remediation projects, environmental awareness campaigns, and sustainable practices (Okeke & Nwankwo, 2024).
This study examines the effectiveness of Chevron's CSR initiatives in mitigating environmental damage and promoting sustainability in Nigeria, with a specific focus on its operations in the Niger Delta region.
Statement of the Problem
Despite Chevron’s CSR efforts, environmental issues such as pollution and ecosystem degradation remain prevalent in its host communities. Concerns have been raised about the adequacy and long-term impact of these initiatives, with some stakeholders questioning the company's commitment to sustainable environmental practices.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of Chevron’s CSR programs in addressing environmental challenges, identifying gaps and potential improvements.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of Chevron’s CSR initiatives on mitigating environmental issues.
2. To evaluate the sustainability of Chevron’s environmental CSR programs.
